Euro-Mediterranean Science and Culture Festival

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES

Photo exhibition “Only in the Mediterranean”- Ribji trg (Fishermen square / Fishermen Port)

In 2017, the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) launched a photography competition under the title “Only in the Mediterranean”. The aim was to capture the spirit of the Mediterranean peoples and cultures through the eyes of an amateur photographer. The images featured in this exhibition represent the best photos depicting the geographic and cultural diversity of the Mediterranean region.

Photo exhibition “Manifestations of faith and religion in the Mediterranean”, by Javier Menéndez Bonilla - EMUNI Library and foyer (Trevisini Palace)

Amateur photographer with a passion for reporting, Javier Menéndez Bonilla has travelled the world and lived in many different countries. Religious celebrations, ceremonies, icons and holy figures, ancient traditions, cultural and natural heritage... the images presented in this exhibition represent testimonies of faith and religion he captured throughout his journeys across the Mediterranean region.

Science café, meet EMUNI partner Universities - EMUNI Library and foyer (Trevisini Palace)

EMUNI partner universities and research centres will present their work and exchange on current scientific challenges in a dynamic interaction with the public. The Science café fosters an informal atmosphere where everyone may engage conversation with a scientist about a particular topic: all participants, who may or may not typically get involved with scientific discussions, are welcome.

Science tour, by Les Petits Débrouillards - Tartinijev trg (Tartini Square)

Les Petits Débrouillards created the Science Tour: a mobile and digital educational tool to make the science accessible to all - from 8 years old - while having fun. During two days, the laboratory-truck and its annex (tent) will transform Tartini square into a popular laboratory. We will tackle the themes of digital technologies (code, modelling, programming...), the city in transition (ecology, economy, smart city...) and living together. Participants will have the opportunity to perform experiments, scientific testing, construction games, and debate to get their own ideas both on the proposed animation format and on the themes presented.

Healthy and active life style, by ZRS Koper - Tartinijev trg (Fishermen square / Fishermen Port)

Come to ZRS Koper mobile laboratory for a health check-up. ZRS experts will perform measurements and testing on the willing participants: physical examination, analysis of the blood composition, grip strength and flexibility tests, level of coordination… will provide you with an insight of your motor and functional condition.

Mediterranean Kitchen - Tartinijev trg (Tartini Square)

Meet the author: presentation of the book “The Mediterranean: A Shared Heritage” by Mohammed H. Elrazzaz, (EMUNI book series) - Tartinijev trg (Tartini Square)

The author, Mohammed H. Elrazza, will present and autograph his book “The Mediterranean: A Shared Heritage”. A limited number of free copies will be distributed among the public.

Closure of the Euro-Mediterranean Science and Culture Festival: Special performance “Mediterranean fusion”, music and dance show - Tartini theatre

Traditional Oriental dances, by Alja Shaar with music by Mahmoud Alkhatib

Alja Shaar has been dancing since she was a little girl. After years of jazz ballet training, under her father's mentoring, her love for Oriental dance has sprung up. She had her first public appearance as one of the first belly dancers in Slovenia. Alja enriched her dance knowledge and experience through various workshops and seminars and is still perfecting it. This endless love and experience lead her to start teaching Oriental dance. Alja Shaar will perform two solo dances of traditional oriental dance, one with tabla beat accompanying her moves which will enchant you in a glimpse and will take you across the Mediterranean into the Arab world.

Traditional Dabké, by Haifa Dance Group

Haifa dance group is diverse and its members are Slovenians and Arabs. They mainly perform on folk songs from the Middle East, precisely from Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. Haifa dancing group mission is to bring the Arab cultural heritage through songs and art to every Slovenian dancing festival, and they have a long and deeply rooted dancing tradition. Dabké is a traditional dance of the Middle East, it has started with people trampling with their feet while working on the roofs and singing. This dance developed over time into what you can see today.

Il tempo in posa”, music by Raffaele Casarano (saxophone) and Marco Bardoscia (double bass), photographs by Pino Ninfa

Il tempo in posa is a project dedicated to the Mediterranean area. From Sicily to Libya, passing through Southern Italy and Sardinia, the musical and photographical journey will take you to local festivals, archaeological sites, abandoned villages and industrial sites, UNESCO World Heritage Cities, the sea with its infinite horizon. A way to rediscover ancient gestures in modern times, to discover that time is a wonderful ally. Never in a hurry, allows the things to last long or fade in a second.
