By plane
The nearest airports are the International Airport of Ljubljana, Slovenia (Jože Pučnik - 23 km northwest of Ljubljana and 150 km away from Portorož) and the International Airport of Trieste, Italy (Ronchi - 70 km away from Portorož).
By car or taxi
You can reach Slovenia and Portorož via major highways from Italy,
Austria, Hungary (via Koper), and Croatia (via Rijeka or Pula). You may
want to consult the online route planner application of ViaMichelin or Google Maps .
As there are poor bus or train connections with both airports we highly recommend to use the taxi.
For more information on booking a taxi you can contact them by email or telephone number: +386 51 607 333.
By train
Slovenia can be reached by train as there are regular connections with
Italy, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, and
Croatia. There are no direct lines to Koper, so you have to get to
Ljubljana or Trieste (Italy), from where you can reach Koper by local
train or bus. Portorož cannot be reached directly by train (as the
coastal railway line terminates in Koper), but the 15km route between
Koper and Portorož is well serviced by bus and taxi. You may want to
consult the Slovenske železnice (Slovenian Railway Company) or Trenitalia
(Italian Railway Company) website for more details. The Koper main bus
station (phone: +386 5 66 25 100) is situated next to the Koper railway
station (phone: +386 5 639 52 63).
By bus
It is also possible to reach Slovenia and Portorož from neighboring
countries by bus. National bus transport is well organized and
relatively inexpensive. Buses from Trieste to Portorož
are scheduled only during weekdays. There is several buses running
daily between Ljubljana and Portorož, the journey takes just under 3
hours. You may want to consult the Ljubljana bus station or Trieste bus station website for details.
Border Formalities and Entry Regulations
Border formalities are limited to the minimum and meet European
standards. With the joining of the Schengen area, internal borders have
been eliminated, which means that road border crossings between
Slovenia and Italy, Austria and Hungary can be freely made. All
passengers that are arriving by plane and are traveling inside the
Schengen area, must still present their identification documents at
check-in and boarding. ID or passport is necessary for identity
confirmation of airline ticket. If you are not travelling inside
Schengen area a passport is needed. All those who need visas to enter
Slovenia can get them at the Slovenian embassy or consulate in their
country.
