EMUNI at Klaipeda University
(28. 06. 2010)

Klaipeda, Lithuania, 28 June. The President of EMUNI, Joseph Mifsud, visited the University of Klaipeda in Lithuania, where he had follow-up discussions on the proposal made during the last General Assembly by the Rector Prof. Dr. Habil. Vladas Žulkus to send the Brabander a Baltic Tall Ship from the maritime city of Klaipeda to the Mediterranean on a journey of intercultural dialogue stopping in maritime ports in the Mediterranean basin, with student sailors coming from EMUNI institutions. A contact person has been appointed to define this proposal further with an agenda of meetings to be held later this year. Further meetings were also held with the Prorectors of Academic Studies - Prof. Dr. Vaidutis Laurnas, Infrastructure - Doc. Dr. Antanas Lukoševičius, development and International Relations - prof. dr. Rimantas Didžiokas, and Science and Arts - Prof. Habil. Dr. Alfonsas Ramonas.

The President of EMUNI also met the President of the student council of Klaipeda University who had delivered a letter in Slovenia with representative students from Lithuania to support the Brabander Tall Ship Project. The discussions in Klaipeda with Rector Vladas Žulkus focused on the proposal of Klaipeda to host a major EMUNI event such as the Annual Higher Education conference, and possibly a senate meeting with a proposal to focus on maritime issues such as maritime highways, business development and de-pollution of the Mediterranean.

During his stay in Klaipeda, the President of EMUNI was also interviewed on Lithuanian television and visited the old port and the old town of Klaipeda, where a business development initiative was launched at the International Maritime Day event last year in Rome, organised by the European Commission, where EMUNI was also present. The President of EMUNI officially invited Klaipeda University to be represented at the higher education conference in Slovenia and to the General Assembly in Ankara in November. Prof. Mifsud also held meetings with Nora Venslovaite, Director of the International Office, Klaipeda University and her colleague Ernesta Prusaite on the proposal of hosting students from the south of the Mediterranean to a summer school in Klaipeda and to attend courses in Lithuania, as agreed with the Rector Žulkus.
