Cathrine Ashton stresses the importance of the Mediterranean
(12. 01. 2010)
The Mediterranean is a top priority for the EU, with its international credibility depending on how it interacts with its neighbours, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has told the European Parliament in preliminary remarks at the start of her public hearing by MEPs.
She told MEPs the wider Mediterranean region was “a top priority”: “There are deep historical ties and common interests that bind us, as well as common problems including illegal migration. We need to take forward the work started under the Union for the Mediterranean.”
EMUNI, through its President and after consultation with members of the Senate of the University representing all the Euro-Mediterranean academic traditions, wishes to pledge its support to the declarations made by Ashton. President Mifsud reiterated that EMUNI »is willing to work hand in hand at the grassroots and at the sea level with the High Representative on developing strategies of academic achievement and research innovation which are just in time for the region«. EMUNI has already been seen as a bridge in the region and an effective project of the Union for the Mediterranean. He added: »It is hoped that the work that EMUNI has been carrying out so appreciated by the European Parliament, EMPA and PAM can be brought to full use by the High Representative. We are very willing to act as an academic think-tank to the High Representative, if and when the need is felt.«
