This working document describes the position of non-vocational adult education in 30 European countries. It considers different aspects of this kind of provision such as its financial, legal and policy framework, aims, target groups, organisation (types of institution, admission requirements, programme approaches and content, qualifications, guidance and quality assurance) and the continuing professional development of trainers.

The information is taken mainly from the national reports in Eurybase, the Eurydice database on education systems in Europe. It has been supplemented by data collected from National Units in the Eurydice Network in December 2005.
